Asuka Lee
JOURNALIST / ACTIVIST
Chaotic World – Re-learning Taiwan
From the stories narrated by Asuka Lee, a media person who has documented Taiwan’s migrant population, we see a once under-appreciated community of Taiwan awaiting discovery. On Migrant’s Park, an online media platform founded by Asuka, college students came in waves to compete for internship opportunities, followed him into factories and shelters to learn about migrant workers’ lives in Taiwan. They penned stories of Indonesian migrant workers who volunteered to collect garbage from coasts and mountains, and witnessed foreign fishermen in Southern Taiwan carrying the sedan chair on their shoulders in the Parade of God as they integrated into the folk life of the island. Talking about his love of water sports, Asuka explains how the practice behind it can liberate Taiwanese people from their feudalistic mindset. Here we see Asuka, practicing freedom and justice through journalism in his homeland.
Asuka Lee, once a young man who had the passionate dream of becoming a cartoonist, is now the editorial director of Taiwan’s independent media platform Migrant’s Park. By documenting the living conditions of migrant workers and new residents in Taiwan, Asuka voices in Chinese for the large Southeast Asian working population, putting in words their feelings of hope, laughter and sorrows. Leading a team of editors and intern journalists, Asuka investigates the immigrants who are from afar yet are the closest partners to the daily lives of Taiwanese. It is a story about the tenacity and richness of the flourishing lives of Taiwan’s diverse ethnic groups, and how they work together for integration and building dreams.
